A Concert of Sacred and Secular Music

Songs by the
St Peter's Boy Choir

Conducted By
Guyon Wells

This recording is part of a programme presented in the Concert Chamber of the Wellington Town Hall by the St Peter's Boys' Choir during a tour of six North Island cities in August 1966. It represents music covering nearly four hundred years of musical history ranging from the purity of Orlando di Lasso's "Adoramus te" to the piquant line of Benjamin Britten's "Cuckoo"!

The St Peter's Boys' Choir has become widely known through its many broadcast and concert recitals. In the course of two tours, it has performed in all the major cities of the North Island. The choir consists of eighteen boys whose ages range from nine to thirteen, all of whom are members of the St Peter’s School, Cambridge, New Zealand.

The Choir which was heard at the Vice-Regal Opening of the 1966 Auckland Festival, was also chosen as the New Zealand European representative for a Children’s Television Festival staged in Tokyo in February 1967.

Since its formation in 1961, the choir has been directed by Guyon Wells, who graduated in music from the University of New Zealand. After four years of post-graduate study in England, Mr Wells returned to take up his position of Director of Music at St Peter’s School. As a former student at Addington Palace, England, he was recently awarded the honorary diploma of Associate Member of the Royal School of Church Music for his distinguished services to the Church music in New Zealand.
