NCEA

The National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA) is New Zealand's main national qualification for secondary school students. Normally Year 11 students would be focussed on Level 1, Year 12 on Level 2, and Year 13 on Level 3. However, our academic programme allows a student to do multi-level study.

NCEA subjects at St Peters have a mixture of internal and external assessments for each course. Assessment of content could be undertaken by using Unit Standards or Achievement Standards, depending on the appropriateness of each type of assessment.
Credits towards NCEA can be attained through either type of standard. A typical subject could have five to nine standards for a total of 20 to 24 credits. A typical Year 11 (Level 1) student studies six subjects, while a five-subject course is the norm for a student studying at Year 12 or 13 (level 2 or 3).
| The Future of Unit Standards in NCEA |
The current review of Standards being undertaken by NZQA may result in a number of the Unit Standards being terminated and most courses entirely made up of Achievement Standards. This will not happen until at least 2011. Many Unit Standards will be retained, in the practical courses like Outdoor Education, Agriculture, Furniture Making, etc.
| Tertiary entry requirements |
Details of entry requirements for New Zealand Tertiary Courses (Polytechnics / Universities) are listed in our Option Booklet.

Alignment for Overseas Institutions
|
For overseas Academic institutions New Zealand has qualification agreements with Australia and the United Kingdom and New Zealand qualifications are accepted for most purposes in the United States. NCEA is included in the publication International Qualifications for Entry into Higher Education, which is used in the UK and internationally for tertiary entrance and selection. Level 3 NCEA is broadly equivalent to English A Levels and Australia’s Higher School Certificate.
NCEA Level 3 results are used in the Interstate Tertiary Index used for entrance to all Australian universities. If students give their permission on their entry form, NZQA will electronically send their results to Australian authorities early in January.
