St Peter's 1st XI vs Hamiltion Boys - Saturday, 31 March 2012

St Peter's wins Waikato Secondary Schools 50 over Final by 8 wickets

In an all-round display of quality skills , St. Peter's never allowed the Hamilton Boys Development team a foothold in this championship final.    Accurate opening bowling spells by Harsimran Mahal (3 - 31 ) and Jason Thomasen ( 3 - 28) knocked over the HBHS top order to have them 6 for 35 after 12 overs. Just 2 batsmen managed double figures to give the HBHS total some respectability.  No 5 Chris Beatson batted well for his 44 not out off 94 balls, ably supported by No 11 Simon Paris (25 runs) to rescue the situation from being 9 down for 66, producing a gutsy and memorable last wicket partnership of 59 to help HBHS post a total of 125 in the 45th over. Tight spin bowling by Josh Oakley (1-25) and Jonathan Whitley (1 - 22), along with 2 well-taken run outs helped finish off the innings.

St. Peter's reply got off to a positive start with opener Doug Bradley attacking early, only to clip a ball off his legs to be well-held by Matt Lowe in close. Left arm Jake Clark's medium pace took both the early wickets of Bradley (12 runs) and Eddie Walker (9), however that was to be the end of any elation for the fielding side. Opener Sam Pulis complied a patient innings of 22 * not out off 73 balls while captain, Tim Seifert was in good form, getting to 63 *not out in 48 balls, striking 7 fours and a towering six to overtake the HBHS total in the 27th over.   Congratulations to St. Peter's 1st XI for taking the Waikato Secondary Schools Division 1 Championship title by 8 wickets, in a dominant and comprehensive manner.

St Peter's Colts Blue vs Cambridge High School

In the final game of the season St Peters Blue were up against Cambridge HS.

St Peters batted first. The field had very long grass so it was difficult to score runs but the team managed to score 113 runs. Standouts included Sam Frengley(26), who batted for a long period of time forming several useful partnerships, and  Jake Mechell, (29).

Cambridge started confidently but some tight bowling eventually paid dividends with their top batsmen dismissed cheaply. Jono Blair was the chief destroyer, taking 4 for 15. Also of mention was Patrick Cunningham, who along with his two wickets, took an outstanding catch that possibly turned the match St Peter’s way.

Overall, a satisfying 35 run win and a great way to finish the season.

St Peter's Blue vs HBHS Grey

St Peter's won the toss and put Hamilton Boys in to bat.  It looked to be the correct decision. Some very tight bowling, a slow grass pitch, a slow outfield and some excellent fielding all helped to constrict Hamilton Boys to only 94 runs. Highlights included Sam Frengley's 3 for 19 off 7 overs , Rhys Duncan's 1 for 8 off 6.3 overs and a spectacular run out by Jonty Barry-Leach.  The run chase began badly with a wicket in the first over. Neil Archary and Sam battled hard against accurate bowling and began to make progress. Unfortunately Sam fell to an inside edge onto his stumps. Despite good starts made by Tom Anderson and Charlie Smail, and some clean hitting by Ricky Foster, St Peters were all out for 66 runs. Neil top scored with 15.  The end result for St Peters was a loss by 28 runs.

St Peter’s Red v St Peter’s Blue

St Peter’s Blue won the toss and elected to bat. Sukhraj Mahal took a wicket with the first ball of the game to put them onto the back foot. Ricky Foster then combined with Neil Achary to add 15 for the second wicket. At 26 for 2 after 7 overs the innings has a small foundation to build on. However a BlackCaps like collapse saw them lose 4 wickets for zero runs, suddenly 26-2 became 26-4. Rhys Duncan and Jake Mechell set about rebuilding the innings, adding 16 for the 7th wicket. A few small partnerships got them through to a total of 63. Neil Achary top scored with 19 with all the bowlers used picking up a wicket. Rishi Kumar, Josh Roberts and Alistair Sutherland collected 2 wickets apiece. In reply, St Peter’s Blue started steadily to reaching 16 before the loss of the first wicket. An excellent spell of bowling from Charlie Smail rocked the innings as he picked up 4 of the 5 quick wickets to fall. At 28-5 the match was evenly poised. Brandon Weal and James Coles steadied the ship and were able to build the match winning partnership, steering their team home to victory by 5 wickets, with 5 overs to spare. Coles was 18 not out and Weal 7 not out. Charlie Smail recorded the best figures of 4-7.

St Peter's Blue vs St Pauls

St Peter's 114-9 (S. Frengley 39, N. Achary 33) lost to St Paul's 116-5 (T.Anderson 2-12) by 5 wickets.

The Junior Boys Blue Colts team had a loss to St Pauls. Having lost the toss the St Peters team were sent into bat.  Facing some high quality and accurate bowling runs were difficult to come by. St Peters scored 114 runs. Neil Achary and Sam Frengley batted very well, with Neil scoring 33 runs. Sam held out against the bowling, refusing to give his wicket away, until he unselfishly sacrificed himself on the penultimate ball of the innings. This meant he was one ball away from carrying his bat – a highly commendable effort given the quality of the opposition. With a low target to defend, it was going to be tough, but 3 quick wickets gave hope. Unfortunately St Pauls reached the target with 4 wickets to spare.

St Peter's Red  vs HBHS Bronze

The innings finished on 97 all out in 39 overs.

He was supported by Sam Pulis with 29, Brandon Weal 26 and a patient 21 from Nathan Tweedy.  Tim Taylor the best of the Morrinsville bowlers with 4 for 54. Poor catching and 51 wides did not help the Morrinsville cause with St Peter's getting through to 256 for 9 in their innings.
A mixed bag of fielding did not help St Peter's either, though a good display behind the stumps by captain Tim Seifert with 3 catches and 2 stumpings help see that Morrinsville were kept under control. Strong hitting by Jarrod Hendley 33 with useful knocks by Tim Taylor 26 and Brett Cameron 28 runs, with Morrinsville reaching 141 in the 33rd over. Pick of the St Peter's bowlers were Jono Whitley with 4 wickets and young medium pacer Ben Richards with 3 for 41.   A win by 116 runs to St. Peter's, in a match more memorable for its wide bowling and dropped catches from both sides.

St Peter's Colts vs Cambridge High - Friday, 9 March AM

 St Peter’s 163-7 (R.Gardner 47, N. Achary 41, R. Kumar 22) beat Cambridge High 74 all out (A.Crayton 4-8, R.Kumar 2-21, N. Bird 2-1) by 89 runs

This brought Riley Gardner and Neil Achary together at the crease. These two changed the match with a 100 run partnership for the second wicket. A quick fire 22 from Rishi Kumar aided by some positive run between the wickets led St Peter’s to 163-7 in their allotted 20 overs.

In reply, Cambridge struggled to get any momentum going against an accurate St Peter’s attack. Wickets fell at regular intervals with only Kent able to build an innings of any substance. Aidan Crayton was the pick of the bowlers with 4 wickets for 8 runs. Cambridge were eventually dismissed in the 20th over for 74. A comprehensive 89 run win to St Peter’s.

The loss of a couple of quick wickets near the end of the innings restricted St Peter’s to 163-3 from their 20 overs.

In reply, Te Aroha lost two early wickets. Dominic and Jayden build a solid partnership of 67 for the third wicket but were always behind the required run rate. Rishi Kumar picked up a couple of wickets through the middle stages and the innings closed with the score on 101 – 7. St Peter’s recorded a comfortable 62 run victory.

The loss of in form opener Paddy Carsons was a cruel blow  for HBHS, who had to retire hurt. with a cut above the eye from a mistimed hook shot in the 7th over and was unable to resume his innings. The HBHS fight back was centred on a well complied 70 runs off 59 balls by Matt Lowe, bowled around his legs by off spinner Jonathan Whitley.

St Peter's Colts Blue vs Hamilton Boys High

St Peter’s School 1st XI v St Paul’s Collegiate 1st XI

St Peter’s School 1st XI 160 all out (Tim Seifert 58; Josh Malpas 3-50, James Chenery 3-21;)
St Paul’s Collegiate 1st XI 70 all out (Huss Mahal 4-14, Jason Thomasen 4-27;)
St Peter’s School 1st XI won by 90 runs and retain the Dave Hoskin Trophy

On a damp, grassy wicket St. Peter's won the toss and decided to bat, raising a few eyebrows. The decision seemed foolhardy with both the St Peter's openers out cheaply off the bowling of Josh Malpas. However, a 79 partnership between Eddie Walker and captain Tim Seifert, who top scored in the match with a well hit 58 off 52 balls proved vital in the final result.

At 116 for 7 in the 35th over it took a dogged batting effort by Matt Joubert (28 runs off 66 balls) to see St.Peter's through to 160 all out. Both Josh Malpas and James Chenery took 3 wickets each, along with a fine spell of bowling from Guy Wilkins with 1 for 7 off 6 over’s.

St.Paul's strong batting line up however, came up against a disciplined 4 man pace attack, that had Freddie Walker caught behind off the second ball and saw McKay, Swanson and Finlayson join him in the 3rd over. Huss Mahal's took 3 wickets in his 2nd over, ending with 4 for 14, aided by some brilliant slip fielding by Ben Schilt. Chris Fawcett (16) and James Chenery (16) offered some determined resistance, both removed by Jason Thomasen, ending with 4 for 27. Sam Pulis bowled with great control for his 2 for 11 off 8 over’s.

The services of ND spin representative, Jono Whitley, was not required, with St Paul's being bowled out for 70 runs in the 22nd over, in what proved to be a comprehensive 90 run victory to the St. Peter\s outfit.

St Peter's School 1st XI vs Matamata College 1st XI at St Peter's School Oval - Sat 11 Feb, 2012

 Matamata 108 / 10 ( Jono Whitley 4/ 6;)

St Peter's 1st XI   111/3 ( Doug Bradley 36, Tim Seifert 45 not out; )

St Peter’s won by 7 wickets and retain the Dave Hoskin Trophy.

Matamata won the toss and decided to put early runs on the board.  However 9 catches and an LBW knocked over the Matamata team for 108 in the 31st over. Some batting resistance from opener Cieran O'Malley 18, Joe Freeman 15 and 10 runs from Zach Bell.
Main wicket takers were Jono Whitley 4 for 6 runs and Jason Thomasen with 2 for 21. Of the fielders, wicketkeeper Tim Seifert took 4,  with 3 boundary catches to Sam Pulis and a sharp catch to Ben Schilt at silly mid on.

St Peter's lost 2 early wickets but a 59 partnership between opener Doug Bradlley ( stumped for 36) and a controlled innings by Tim Seifert of 45*not out  in 36 balls saw St Peter's 1st XI pass the total in the 19th over to secure the win by 7 wickets and thus retain the Dave Hoskin Cup.
