STARS Concert is St Peter’s answer to an annual talent concert. Students across all year levels are encouraged to put themselves forward and share their talents – be they musical, dramatic, dance based, or other! This in-house event is hosted by the performing arts prefects and allows students to develop performance confidence and shine on stage.
St Peter’s is renowned for its outstanding annual musical theatre productions. This large scale performing arts event is the pinnacle of performing arts at St Peter’s, and brings together music, dance and drama, with a cast of up to fifty students. Students audition to be part of this extravaganza of singing, acting and dancing, led by a professional team of creatives. Recent productions include Into The Woods, The Wedding Singer, Pippin, CATS, and AIDA. Students gain a tremendous amount from the school production: self-knowledge and confidence, friendship and a sense of community, artistic expression and skills development. For some, these experiences provide the foundation for their future careers.
This concert is a celebration of contemporary music. All the performances are student-led and include solos, duos, and groups, covers and original compositions. Rock of Ages celebrates the many genres of popular music, and gives students the opportunity to enjoy a large onstage experience with a big PA system and great support from their peers.
The purpose of this competition is to encourage those individuals and groups who receive tuition in Speech and Drama, both within St Peter’s and in the community, to enjoy a chance to display their skills and talents in a competitive arena. Students are able to compete for prizes in either individual or small group situations. This competition is about celebrating students’ technical achievements and offers students’ a focal point to their studies.
Each year the school enjoys an impressive display of music and school spirit in the House Music competition. The four competitive houses compete in three categories: Junior House, Senior House, and Full House. A theme for House Music is chosen each year by the Music Department, and this follows on to the evening House Rock competition, where each competitive house puts together a rock band, presenting two songs. Students of all levels of musical interest participant together to produce some remarkable performances.
The Dance Showcase is a public performance of curricular and extracurricular dance, including a variety of different dance styles and guest performers. This popular evening concert gives talented dancers the chance to perform original choreography and a range of solo, duo, ensemble and group dances.
The Bevan Cup competition is an individual music competition for all vocal and instrumental students, established at the school’s inception. The name ‘Bevan Cup’ comes from the trophy for Prep School students. Senior School students compete for the Walton Cup. There are a large range of awards and trophies given which recognise students’ musical accomplishments and encourage their commitment to the studies.
The Kammermusik competition provides an opportunity for acoustic music–making in a group setting. There are two parts to the competition:
duet/duo class for matched or paired acoustic instruments, and ensemble class for acoustic instruments. The group must have no fewer than three members and no more than eight.
Students’ creativity and self-expression are given free rein in the Composition Competition which gives students an opportunity to present their own original songs and more classically based works in a competitive setting. Students organise live performances of their works, in collaboration with performers, and the pieces are then judged by an outside adjudicator, with awards given.
The Mulled Wine Evening is a cabaret style performance evening of high quality senior music student performances, complete with delicious nibbles and mulled wine. Performances are a range of solo and ensemble items, in a variety of musical genres.
This concert is held early in Term 4 as a celebration of all the Performing arts events in Term 3. High achieving performers across music, dance and drama share their talents in a range of solo, ensemble, and large group items. This concert is open to the whole school family and the public, and features some of our most talented artists.
