Teacher Profile

Oliver Alini - Head of Faculty - Science

Albert Einstein once said “I never teach my pupils, I only provide the conditions in which they can learn.”

Some years later our new Head of Science, Oliver Alini echoes those sentiments here at St Peter’s he has been excited about what opportunities students have when they enter the St Peter’s science faculty.  “Having a dedicated Prep School science programme, utilising fully equipped science laboratories is very rare” he observes.

Science at St Peter’s is supported through 17 highly skilled and passionate teachers working in 10 modern and fully equipped laboratories as well as having access to exceptional spaces that support the Agriculture and Horticulture programme in a way no other school can.    Although Oliver’s specialty is Physics and he currently teaches IB 1 & 2 Physics, NCEA Year 13 and Y11 Advanced Physics, he is a firm believer that Science is uniquely placed to help students to develop the critical and creative thinking skills that will assist them navigate the challenges of life after school.

His start wasn’t terribly straightforward, as less than one term into his role at St Peter’s, the country went into Lockdown and he was confronted with teaching and leading the faculty in the online environment while still coming to terms with the IB and NCEA curriculum.  However, he was impressed with the high quality of teaching and learning that occurred during that period and was exceptionally pleased with the high level of collaboration that occurred amongst the Science team.   “We found new ways to teach and to track our students so that their level of learning wasn’t disadvantaged by the fact we were not in the classroom.”
