Snowsports

Offered during term 3 for keen skiers and snowboarders of intermediate level and above. The programme includes coaching on the mountain, lodge accommodation and transport.

Programme Structure

Coaching is provided by Ruapehu Alpine Coaching for:
- Beginner skiers and snowboarders with a small amount of experience in the snow
- Intermediate skiers and snowboarders
- Advanced skiers and snowboarders

2017 Events

Waikato Secondary School Snow Champs

We had 28 competitors.  In the freestyle ski events Chloe McMillan retained her title from previous years winning convincingly.  The Stewart brothers, Christian year 11 and Benji year 10 finished 1st and 2nd respectively.   Trent Morris was our top slalom result finishing in 3rd place.  Other top ten finishes were:  Naomi Hirayama 5th, Bridget Speed 6th and Fin Barlow 9th   Snowboarders dominated with Ruby Rogers finishing with two 2nd placings in the freestyle and the slalom.  Mac Rogers secured 2nd place in the freestyle and 6th in the slalom.  George Thorpe 9th and James Wilson 10th were other top ten performances of the day. 

NZSS Ski Champs

St Peter’s had two teams competing at this highly contested competition, where there were more than 100 teams from around the North Island.  Each team consists of mixed genders and a combination of seniors and juniors.   Individual highlights were Chloe McMillan’s gold medal in the slope style event that includes executing very technical skills.   Our A team of Christian Stewart, Trent Morris, Benji Stewart, Fin Barlow, Naomi Hirayama and Chloe finished 28th place out of 124 teams.  Our second team of Matt Rorison, Bridget Speed, Joshua Brown, Olivia Lewisham and Roza Crawford finished not far behind in 32nd place.

National Giant Slalom Ski Champion    

Meghan Hood was crowned U16 National Giant Slalom Ski Race Champion at Cardrona.  Meghan spent the winter terms training with the Cardrona Ski Race team based in Wanaka. She also competed in the National Youth Series races against New Zealand and international girls in her age group to secure the championship title.

Ruby Rogers achieved three podium finishes at this event in the Giant Slalom, Half Pipe and Free Ride. This placed her second overall for the senior girls division, and a WRT (World Rookie Tour) ranking, which is an International ranking with other female snowboarders competing in the same event around the world.   Ruby is part of the very successful Ruapehu Snow Sports programme and this has enabled her to fine tune and perfected her Snowboarding skills in all disciplines.
