The "Prep" Advantage

Prep School (Years 7–8) at St Peter’s, Cambridge provides an environment in which your child can flourish.

Prep School embodies our heritage and our future. St Peter’s started as a preparatory school for boys. Those days embedded cherished traditions that continue to shape our school community. Today, our world class learning environment and seamless transition into the secondary school are key advantages for our Year 7–8 boys and girls.

Students build a strong foundation for learning in Prep School. Our Prep students improve their understanding and skills in all aspects of Literacy and Numeracy beyond the expectations of New Zealand National Standards.

Our Prep School has a family feel. Your child will be nurtured in this close-knit group within our whole school community. Students benefit from small class sizes and homeroom teachers who are skilled, experienced and committed to your child's all round well-being. Our Prep School has a strong focus on developing personal values for effective learning and for living. We always encourage boys and girls to build positive peer relationships with each other inside and outside the classroom.

Strong connection with parents is important to us. For each student, academic progress and personal well-being are communicated regularly to parents through ongoing online reporting, and interviews. Our teachers encourage parents to engage fully with all aspects of their child’s life at St Peter’s.

Prep students also benefit from relationships with the wider school community. Senior students (Years 11–13) provide positive role models, and maintain a supportive culture which bridges across year groups. They are regularly involved in the Prep School in a range of ways, including help with homework and tutoring. Engaging with our seniors is a valuable experience for Prep students that helps them transition well into our secondary school.

The Prep Block is designed for flexible, innovative learning opportunities. Students have homerooms situated around a large atrium. Homerooms can be opened out onto the atrium for a range of activities — collaborative, larger group or individual. This environment complements our learning programmes, giving students opportunities to use different learning styles according to their preferences and appropriate to the learning task.

Our Prep students benefit from specialist teachers and facilities in the secondary school. This includes access to our science laboratories, performing arts facilities, music teachers, and more. Your child will also have opportunities to begin learning another language — Māori, Spanish, Mandarin, Italian, French or Japanese.

Prep School also provides opportunities for your child to fully engage with digital technologies. As a BYOD (bring your own device) school, technology is an integrated part of the curriculum. Students will use their device in most lessons alongside traditional learning methods and interactive group work. 3D printing, computer programing and coding to produce animation are some of the specialised skills students will develop at St Peter’s. See the Years 7–8 Academic pages for more information:

Prep School offers a wealth of sporting and cultural opportunities. Being part of the whole school community means Prep students can choose from a large range of sports and have access to world class sports facilities and expert coaches. Cultural opportunities in performing arts are also broad and include a biennial Prep School stage production. Prep students benefit from inspiring role models in sports and performing arts. Our students also attend chapel services that contribute to developing the whole person — body, mind and spirit.Follow the links below to find out more about our Prep School extra curricular activities:
