St Peter’s brought home five new National Cycling Champions from the Northern Tour held in Auckland during Tournament Week.
Jack Carswell won the U15 Boys Individual Time Trial and Individual Hill Climb. Hamish Banks and Jess Carswell took out the U13 Individual Time Trial titles, while Ally Wollaston won the U17 Girl’s Hill Climb.
The Northern Tour is open to all school age riders from around the country, with racing over two days and three stages. Points from each stage go towards an overall winner.
This event also had two National Titles at stake in all age groups. The Individual Time Trial and the Hill Climb Time Trial. The Hill Climb was a gruelling race up Mount Wellington. Both events were held on Saturday in extremely unfavourable weather conditions.
Sunday’s weather did not improve and the 12 St Peter’s riders battled the wind and rain in the Criterium, a multiple lap sprint style race, with points available every lap going towards the sprint ace prize and General Classification. Our four national champions all came first in the Criterium.
With over 500 students taking part, rivalry was fierce, but it was also the perfect opportunity to scope out the competition as our riders prepare for the National Schools Cycling Championships in Levin at the end of September.
