International victory for young cyclist

Congratulations to Year 12 Ally Wollaston who won 3 golds, 2 silvers and 1 bronze at the Oceania Track Cycling Championships!

Ally Wollaston competing in the 2km Individual Pursuit at the Oceania Track Cycling Championships.

On top of her medals, Ally set a new personal best for the 2km Individual Pursuit by 6 seconds.

She said her favourite aspect of competing in the event was the team environment, and getting an idea of what it was really like to be part of a New Zealand team.

St Peter’s staff and students gathered at the Avantidrome (located at St Peter’s) to witness her win in the 2km Individual Pursuit.

"It was a real surprise to see many St Peter’s supporters up in the stands as I had no idea they were coming, but to hear them shouting for me was an amazing feeling. It made me feel extremely proud to be a St Peter’s student," she said.

Her next major competition is the National Track Championships in late February, which will be held in Invercargill. Her goal is to stand out enough to be selected for Junior World Championships in August 2018 in Switzerland.

Her coach Tim Carswell was extremely proud of her achievements.

"Ally possesses a great combination of endurance, power and tactical ability which makes her capable of riding multiple events. The Oceania Track Championship serves as part of the selection process for the Junior World Championships in 2018.

"A further good showing at the NZ Track Championships early next year will help support Ally’s bid for selection," he said.

Ally's final results:

Gold - 3km Team Pursuit
Gold - 2k Individual Pursuit
Gold - Points Race
Silver - Scratch Race
Silver -  Madison, with team mate Eva Parkinson
Bronze - Omnium (combined points from four endurance races on one day).
