Inaugural Groundwork Contemporary Sculpture Event

New Zealand's best sculpture is coming to the Waikato this autumn, filling a gap left by the cancellation of many major annual art events dedicated to showcasing art outdoors.  An enterprising local partnership is moving into this space.

St Peter’s School on Cambridge's outskirts has recently begun collecting contemporary sculptures for display in their magnificent campus. They are firmly of the belief that art in students' lives can only be a great thing with the potential for a lifelong positive impact. Together with MESH Sculpture Hamilton, and the Cambridge Autumn Festival they are presenting a temporary exhibition of the best contemporary work.

MESH has had an enormous creative impact on Hamilton over the last decade, presenting four major public sculptures gifted to the city from independently raised funds. This opportunity to collaborate on a temporary project has allowed them to bring more great sculptures to a growing local audience.

St Peter’s Sculpture 'Immersive Echoes' by Gregor Cragar will feature as will new artwork from Gregor which will be for sale.

Dale Burden, Executive Principal of St Peter’s Cambridge says "It is a privilege to showcase the work of outstanding New Zealand artists. St Peter’s grounds are a superb location for a sculpture exhibition, and we are looking forward to welcoming the community onto our campus. I am sure that school students from both St Peter’s and the wider Waikato will be inspired by the creativity and beauty of the exhibition."

Karen O'Meeghan, MESH Sculpture Hamilton agrees "We see this collaboration as a fantastic way to extend what we do, encourage audiences, and generate more dialogue about great art in our region."

Groundwork will feature as part of the 2021 Cambridge Autumn Festival. “It is an honour to have this major sculpture event to be presented in Cambridge. Along with the people of Cambridge and the Cambridge Autumn Festival, we welcome this exciting art event.” David McCathie, Cambridge Autumn Festival organiser.

The list of significant New Zealand artists includes Gregor Kregar, Judy Darragh, David McCracken, Virginia King, Jeff Thompson, Mary-Louise Browne, and Seung Yul Oh, among others. The first time such a line up has appeared in Cambridge, it will be a must see show!

Dates: 20th and 21st March, and 27th and 28th March 2021.
