INTRODUCTION
The recognition of alumni through a Distinguished Alumni Award is a practice to which many of St Peter’s contemporaries subscribe, particularly those who value their alumni. St Peter’s School adopted this practice in 2018 and will continue to honour alumni of note in this way in the future. The Distinguished Alumni Award is a way of endorsing excellence in the St Peter’s alumni community within the spirit of the School’s ethos of the education of body, mind and spirit. The Award seeks to recognise alumni whose achievements epitomise this goal.
THE AWARD
Recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award each receive a specifically designed commemorative piece designating the recipient’s name and the date of the presentation. The St Peter’s School crest and logo contain an owl as a symbol of wisdom. In keeping with this, the commemorative piece is colloquially known as the Golden Owl. (St Peter’s awards a Silver Owl for academic achievement) and has been designed and created by Cambridge glass artist, Di Tocker. Di was chosen, as a local artist of national renown, to create a glass sculpture appropriate to the excellence of the recipients of the award.
AWARD CRITERIA
The Award is made, on an annual basis, to recognise three alumni (two older alumni and one alumnus under the age of 35) for the following:
1. A series of achievements of note in the fields of business, social, cultural, sporting, or environmental well-being of the community; and/or
2. A career of exceptional national or international accomplishment.
The award may only be made to the successful nominees at the annual presentation dinner event. However, if the nominee is unable to attend the event in the year of nomination, the award may be held over to the following year. Unsuccessful nominees in any given year may be reconsidered in subsequent years. Anyone may nominate a St Peter’s alumnus and alumni of St Peter’s are defined as someone who has studied at St Peter’s for a minimum of one year.
2020 Nomination Process and Timeline
The confidential nomination process includes the submission of a nomination form supported by a curriculum vitae or citation and three independent short statements of support. The selection panel includes the Chair of the Alumni Association Committee, Principal of St Peter’s School, President of the St Peter’s School Foundation and Director of Advancement.
