AON Junior Regatta

Two boats made the A final of the Girls U16 coxed eight.

After a threatening weather forecast, the first day of racing dawned bright for near perfect rowing conditions as the 2023 AON Junior Regatta got underway.  In this regatta rowers were representing their school and not their club so donned the St Peter’s school rowing colours for the first time this season.

St Peter’s fielded a number of rowers across numerous heats and ended the Saturday with 21 boats in 20 A finals and 3 boats in B finals.  One of only three schools to reach that number of finals.

Sunday’s finals started well with Harrison McClintock taking third place in the A Final in the boys U17 single sculls, improving his time by 11 seconds from the race the previous day.  The finals continued to deliver some exciting  results with two first places by the U17 boys double scull crew of Josh Yeoman and Valentin Barrio-Frojan , who were later joined by team mates Harrison McClintock and Khaidar Tuikin and coxswain Leti Hay, to take out the U17 boys coxed quad sculls title.

U18 girls double sculls pair of Imogen Short and Arabella Barrio-Frojan were the first crew to secure a second place, followed by the girls U16 coxed eight, the girls U15 double sculls, the U15 boys coxed quad sculls, the U16 girls coxed four.  Following this up with five third places, the school made top three in over half of their finals, most of which were A finals.

Valentin and Josh storming home to take the U17 double sculls win.

This sets the St Peter’s rowers up for a healthy North Island Secondary School Championship in two weeks, after which time the Maadi crews will be confirmed ready for racing on 27 March 2023.    St Peter’s looks forward to welcoming schools from all around New Zealand to Cambridge for an exciting AON Maadi Regatta 2023.
