What an extraordinary celebration of performance, creativity and talent The Speech and Drama Cup proved to be.
The day was filled with outstanding performances, impressive recitals, powerful monologues, engaging scenes and wonderfully confident speeches. From moments of great humour and energy to performances that were genuinely moving, the students demonstrated not only remarkable talent but also the courage, preparation and commitment required to step onto a stage and perform in front of an audience.
The standard across the competition was exceptionally high. There were so many memorable performances that choosing award winners was certainly no easy task. The students should be incredibly proud of the way they embraced the opportunity to perform, taking risks, supporting one another and showing just how much can be achieved through the Speech and Drama programme. The recitals in particular were a highlight, with many students displaying an impressive command of voice, expression, characterisation and audience engagement.
And the audience reaction was fantastic. Laughter, applause, concentration and genuine appreciation filled PA5 throughout the day. It was wonderful to see students not only performing for one another but actively celebrating the achievements of their peers. That sense of encouragement and community is perhaps one of the greatest successes of The Speech and Drama Cup.
A huge thank you must also go to our wonderful adjudicator, Sarah Wright, whose experience, warmth and expertise made such a valuable contribution to the event. Her thoughtful and sage advice was greatly appreciated by the students, providing them with practical insights and encouragement that they can take forward into their future performances. Sarah managed to balance constructive criticism with genuine celebration of each student's individual strengths, making the adjudication experience both valuable and inspiring.
The success of an event like this is also a testament to the incredible support behind the scenes. A very special thank you to Mary Lin, Christy Mills, Carol Coley and Rachel Bloemendal for their organisation, support and commitment to making the day such a success. It is wonderful to see St Peter’s so invested in developing future artists, performers, public speakers and orators. Events such as this demonstrate the importance of giving young people opportunities to find their voice, develop confidence, communicate effectively and experience the transformative power of the performing arts.
