Taking on the Coromandel Classic

Multisport

The ‘Classic’ is a very tough two-day multisport event over a 176km course in which teams circumnavigate the Coromandel Peninsula on road bikes, mountain bikes, kayaking, and trail running. With combined teams of students, staff and alumni, St Peter’s finished 1st in the three person team category and 2nd in the two person team category.

St Peter’s 2017 Coro Classic team: Marc Scott (staff), Matt Scott (alumni), Morgan Brown, Bradley Scott (alumni), Clare Milne, Scott Miller, Josh Wedlake (staff)

Completing this race is in itself a major achievement. St Peter’s students were the only school age athletes competing.

Staff and alumni ran the trail running legs for our teams. These components are restricted to over 18s due to the remote nature of the trails and the length of the runs — 3 hours plus for most competitors on the Karaka Trail.

Scott Miller (kayaker and cyclist) and Matt Scott (runner, alumni) finished second in the two person teams category, and 5th overall, in a time of 10 hours 53 minutes. This was an awesome achievement, considering Scott was racing for six and a half hours over the two days!

Day 1: 30k Road Cycle 46m13s (Scott), 18k Trail Run 1h33m08s (Matt), 30k Road Cycle 52m59s (Scott), 15k Kayak 1h29m40s (Scott).

Day 2: 28k Road Cycle 58m05s (Scott), 15k Kayak 1h22m04s (Scott), 17k Uphill Mountain Bike 1h01m54s (Scott), 23k Trail Run 2h48m59s (Matt).

Clare Milne (kayaker), Morgan Brown (cyclist), Josh Wedlake (runner, St Peter’s staff) won the three person teams section in a total time of 11 hours 8 minutes.

Morgan opened with a very impressive first leg cycle, arriving in the lead bunch, just 50 seconds behind the fastest adult male!

Clare’s kayaking proved very strong in the rough conditions, headwind and upstream.

Day 1: 30k Road Cycle 46m51s (Morgan), 18k Trail Run 1h43m31s (Josh), 30k Road Cycle 53m56s (Morgan), 15k Kayak 1h29m22s (Clare).

Day 2: 28k Cycle 1h05m23s (Morgan), 15k Kayak 1h15m33s (Clare), 17k Uphill Mountain Bike 58m36s (Morgan), 23k Trail Run 2h55m37s (Josh).

Congratulations also to Bradley Scott (alumni) who finished 4th in the individual mens' event in 11 hours 36 minutes.

Special thanks to Mr Marc Scott for his help supporting the teams over the weekend.
