St Peter’s 1st XI and Colts teams both won their matches this weekend. The 1st XI triumphant over Marist Suburbs Senior A and the Colts beating St Paul's Collegiate.
Our 1st XI mark their first win in the Men's Grade for 2017, beating Marist Suburbs by 11 runs.
St Peter’s skipper Campbell Child won the toss and elected to bat.
Wickets fell steadily, despite a fluent 35 from Campbell before he was bowled.
The outfield was damp and this made run scoring difficult as the ball tended to slow up on the large ground.
At 70/5 the boys put together a string of small but significant partnerships, as it turned out. Firstly, between Aston Towers and Tiger Houston (37), then between Tiger and Olly Louden (47) and then at the death between Cam Cresswell and Quinn Alexander (32).
This took St Peter’s through to a reasonable score of 188/8, the second week in a row they had batted all their allotted overs.
The team knew they had to bowl straight and pick up early wickets if they were to have any chance of winning, and this they did.
Tiger Houston picked up 2 quick wickets before there were 3 small partnerships.
All the while the boys were fielding superbly, not giving the opposition any easy runs, so keeping the pressure on.
Bodie Mechell was possibly the standout fielder on the day, but there were several good catches taken and no chances missed.
Marist Suburbs then got a good partnership of 50 together, which was broken by Tiger Houston coming back for his second spell.
As was the case last week, the Marist Suburbs innings was being held together by one batsman, Matt Missen. He was on 78 when Baxter Kane got him to mistime a pull shot, taking a fine 'caught and bowled' to leave Marist Suburbs 8 down, still needing 11 runs to win.
The last two wickets fell without a further run being added. St Peter’s were jubilant to take a well deserved victory.
Match Summary
St Peter’s 188-9 (Tiger Houston 47, Campbell Child 35, Cam Cresswell 20 not out, Ollie Louden 14) beat Marist-Suburbs CC 177 all out from 46.4 overs (Tiger Houston 5-24 (10), Baxter Kane 2-32 (9), Campbell Child 1-23 (9.4), Quinn Alexander 1-27 (7) by 11 runs.
Pre-season, academy development and conditioning sessions came to the fore in the St Peter’s Colts game against St Paul's Collegiate, the Colts playing a full 80 overs match first up.
The top four batsman were Logan Tindall, Joe Gatley, Connor Jacobson and James Wakelin; Joe Gatley batting through to 50.
A run of late wickets saw St Peter’s players out, providing some good lessons and creating pressure for the win.
Alex Macdonald and Hunter Coxon played important innings in support of James Wakelin, who led his team home in getting 10 off the last 2 overs and 3 off the last 2 balls in a great days cricket.
Harrison Shaw was our best bowler in his opening spell overs. He came back in the middle to counter St Paul's best two batsman building a partnership, restricting them both and then dismissing one.
Tom Louden also bowled well in the opening spell and at the death.
Kirwyn Ellis did well in bowling 8 overs, without much bowling work coming off his injury break, which St Peter’s needed.
Logan Tindall bowled well to restrict the run scoring from their 2 best batsman through the middle.
Final score in the Colts match: St Pauls Colts, 161/8 in 40 overs. St Peter’s Colts, 162/8 in 39.5 overs. St Peter’s won by 2 wickets.
