There has been a lot of disruption to sport this winter and for the St Peter’s, Cambridge Premier Netball Team, this resulted in two major netball tournaments being cancelled - Upper North Island and New Zealand Secondary Schools Tournaments.
As the 2019 NZSS Netball Champions, our premier netball coaches Ange Russek and Te Aroha Keenan hatched a plan - host our own “St Peter’s Premier Netball Invitational Tournament” that would replicate a high level of competition, as well as enabling secondary school netballers to come together at the end of their season.
Top North Island secondary school teams were invited, from Wellington to North of Auckland and the immediate response was positive. This resulted in the maximum of 12 teams being secured very early in the planning. After securing the maximum 12 teams, they were inundated with emails from other schools expressing interest. Ange and Te asked “What is stopping us from running a Tier 2 tournament the week before?” The enthusiasm and energy went up another level and next thing, St Peter’s was hosting a 3-day tournament from 30 September – 2 October for sixteen more teams who had missed out on the initial tournament. Up and coming netballers had the opportunity to play in a development St Peter’s invitational team at this second tournament.
St Peter’s is a one-stop venue with accommodation on-site, indoor courts, dining hall facilities and pool and gym recovery. Todd Barker (Strength and Conditioning Coach) and Ben Feinberg-Danieli (Aquatic Director) are providing recovery sessions in the gym and pool - this has been a big hit with teams! Body Performance Physio are offering on-site physio treatments and strapping sessions for all players.
NZ qualified umpires quickly registered interest, with some of the top umpires from the regions attending, along with umpire support coaching in place during the two weeks.
Ange sums it up "these tournaments are a great example of a team effort with all our sport management staff and student netballers on board and ready to help where they can. Over two weeks we will have 26 teams visiting our campus and enjoying our outstanding facilities. Our goal is to provide them with top level service, quality netball games and a positive tournament experience."
On Friday, the Tier 2 Netball tournament came to an end with some closely contested final games across all rounds. St Peter’s facilities were well received alongside the support of St Peter’s staff and netball student volunteers on site during these holidays. This is definitely an idea that will grow and gather momentum for future years. Top four teams were Auckland Girls Grammar, Waitakere, Rangitoto and Samuel Marsden (Wellington). Rangitoto winning 36-23 for 3rd/4th play off and Waitakere taking the tournament title and The Wintec Sports Science trophy from Auckland Girls Grammar in a decisive 36-23 win.
Final placings were:
On Tuesday 6 October, the second tournament – the Premier Invitational Netball Tournament starts with the following teams competing:
This is definitely an idea that will grow and gather momentum for future years. Thanks to all those teams who registered their interest to play.
