Maadi Results

U16 boys Quad silver - L - R Coach Chris Thorsen, Alyssa Sherry-Middlemiss (cox), Valentin Barrio Frojan, Jack Kidd, Joshua Yeoman and Harrison McClintock.

St Peter’s took a team of 38 rowers down to Twizel for the 2022 New Zealand Secondary School’s Rowing Championships (Maadi) from 28 March to 2 April and what a wonderful week of racing it was! The weather was absolutely outstanding, with just a little bit of fog one day and a tiny bit of rain and wind on Friday morning, the conditions were stunning for a great 6 days of racing.

The team made it through to 12 A Finals and 7 B Finals, which was an awesome achievement (the most A Finals by any school). This makes us the school with the most crews in the top eight in New Zealand. There was some incredibly tough and tight racing, and our U16 Boys had a wonderful regatta picking up Silver in the U16 Boys Quad (Harrison McClintock, Josh Yeoman, Jack Kidd, Valentin Barrio and coxswain Alyssa Sherry-Middlemiss) finishing between two South Island schools. Then Harrison also had an outstanding race to pick up Silver in a very tight finish in the U16 Boys 1X. A total of 95 schools competed at the regatta and we finished tied for 23rd overall with 45 schools winning medals across the regatta and finished 12th equal in the points competition for the Presidents Scull.

A week of tight racing produced some hard-fought fourth placings in events. Samantha Eden and Chloe Challis having a good battle with the girls from Wellington all the way down the course in the U18 Girls Pair, ultimately just missing out on a medal by 1 second. In recent weeks, the U16 Girls squad had been plagued by covid and so for one of their crews to place fourth in the U16 Girl’s quad was a massive achievement. This was another crew coxed by Head Girl Alyssa Sherry-Middlemiss, well done Meg Hazlett, Sophie Walker, Keana Woodfield, and Lucy O’Donohoe. The Christchurch Girl schools were very strong in the girls’ sweeping events, a 5th place in the Girls U16 eight by Amelia Donovan, Keana Woodfield, Meg Hazlett, Letizia Hay, Charlise Davison, Georgia Wenham, Sophie Walker and Brooke Weir, coxed by Shakayla Davison was quite an impressive feat.

The following crews also placed in the A finals at the regatta:
Girls U16 coxed four – 5th – Amelia Donovan, Keana Woodfield, Meg Hazlett, Letizia Hay and Aarushi Nanjappa.
Girls U18 single sculls – 6th – Samantha Eden.
Boys U18 coxed quad sculls – 7th – Toby Robinson, Karim Tuikin, Harrison McClintock, Connor Davison and Esme MacGillivray.
Boys U16 double sculls – 7th – Joshua Yeoman and Jack Kidd.
Girls U17 coxed eight – 7th – Arabella Barrio Frojan, Hannah Stuart, Ella Ryan, Amelia Davidson, Caitlin Moriarty, Maddi McGuire, Imogene Short, Zara Wrigley and Katie Axtell.
Boys U17 single sculls – 8th – Toby Robinson.
Girls U17 coxed quad sculls – 8th – Arabella Barrio Frojan, Hannah Stuart, Amelia Davidson, Zara Wrigley, Heidi Baldwin.

A big congratulations to Samantha Eden, Chloe Challis, Toby Robinson, Karim Tuikin, Harrison McClintock, Connor Davison and Esme MacGillivray who will all receive Top 10 badges from Rowing NZ for placing in the top 10 in their respective events at U18 level. These badges recognise the hard work and discipline required to produce a top 10 placing in the highest grade of Secondary School rowing.

South Island Rowing did a fantastic job of running the regatta to keep everyone safe and allow the racing to go ahead. We would like to thank our amazing managers and coaches and support staff who helped make the trip possible.
