Knitting for Service Group Making a Difference, One Stitch at a Time

What started in late 2025 with a small group of enthusiastic knitters, a collection of spare needles, and a few balls of leftover wool has grown into a thriving service initiative at St Peter’s.

The Knit for Service group now includes more than 30 students and staff who meet regularly to create handmade items for families in need. In 2026, Knit for Service has been working with the LovingArms organisation to support their ongoing mission of creating a lineage of hope through love and support so that those who receive help can make a positive change for their family’s future. Their mission is truly inspiring and collaborating with them has been a fulfilling experience. Students and staff members have made outstanding progress in knitting vests, socks, beanies and their team blanket project.

The initiative welcomes participants of all skill levels, from complete beginners learning their first stitches to experienced knitters and crocheters keen to share their expertise. Beyond developing new skills, the group provides an opportunity for students and staff to connect through a shared purpose while making a meaningful contribution to the wider community.

Each item created is made with care and compassion, helping to provide warmth, comfort, and support to those facing challenging circumstances. The growing success of the programme reflects the generosity and service-minded spirit of those involved.

The group is always grateful for donations of knitting and crochet supplies. If you have spare knitting needles, crochet hooks, or unused yarn at home, donations can be dropped off at the School Main Office or CG04 in The College. These contributions help ensure the group can continue creating handmade items for families who need them most.

If you would like to learn more about Knit for Service or make a donation of supplies, please contact staff members Jodie (jodieb@stpeters.school.nz), Jane (jane.steel@stpeters.school.nz), or Christine (christinem@stpeters.school.nz), or student co-founder Nicole Ji (nji@stpeters.school.nz). The group welcomes new members and support from the wider St Peter’s community.
