Schools battle it out at cycling event

We had numerous successes at the Battle of the Schools Track Cycling event, which was held at the Avantidrome on December 2.

St Peter’s entered two Prep Italian Pursuit Teams, which is where four riders take to the track in a sprint style race. Each rider must complete one lap of the velodome before swinging up out of the way for their teammate to do the same. The time is taken on the fourth rider as the cross the finish line.

For many of the prep riders, this was their first tatse of racing and they certainly impressed themselves and their families.

St Peter’s White were top qualifiers and dominated the Italian Pursuit Competition from the first round through to the final where they beat Tamahere School in the gold medal ride.

St Peter’s Blue qualified second quickest. A small hiccup in their second ride saw them in the bronze medal ride off, where they rode fast and strong to place third overall in the competition.

St Peter’s Red had the fastest qualifying time in the Team Pursuit by eight seconds over Cambridge Middle School. They continued to dominate in the second round and took gold in the final.

We extend a huge thank you to all the parents who helped on the day and to those who came to support us. It was an impressive display of how far the students have come in such a short time.
